ISCC - International Sustainability and Carbon Certification

ISCC - International Sustainability and Carbon Certification

Creation date

For more than two years now (June 2019) Tradebe Port de Barcelona has had the ISCC Plus Certificate for Tradebe Green Fuel (TGF), a fuel obtained from oily waste from ships (MARPOL, Annex I).

Given the current stage of transformation of the economic model, we can see that the linear economy model that has been dominant until now is giving way to the concept and model of circular economy, as a new way of generating economic, environmental and social value, in a responsible and environmentally sustainable way.

Any economic activity involves the consumption and exploitation of resources, transforming them in turn into products and/or services, generating waste or emissions. But... What if we could limit or reduce this exploitation of resources as much as possible, managing to reuse them over and over again?

This is a case of making the most of existing energy resources, it is about transforming resources by reusing them and lengthening the life cycle of products. Everything has value and waste is made use of and converted into a new resource. In this way, development and progress are maintained in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

But what is ISCC certification?

ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) provides a recognised, practical and transparent system to ensure the circular traceability of our recycling process.

In July 2011, ISCC EU was fully recognised by the European Commission to demonstrate compliance with the sustainability criteria of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and the Fuel Quality Directive (FQD). In addition, ISCC certification goes beyond the requirements of the RED and FQD to include extensive ecological and social requirements.

The voluntary ISCC scheme reinforces the adoption of sustainable practices in our daily work, as well as in each of the elements that make up the chain of custody of our product. With its seal, we guarantee the control of compliance with the system's procedures in our storage and production centres, prioritising our environmental performance and customer satisfaction.

Tradebe has developed technologies capable of converting waste from ships in the Ports of Barcelona and Tarragona into a final product that can be used as renewable fuel.

Since our ISCC Plus certification, all our products originating from this type of waste are issued under a Sustainability Declaration. And while certification cannot be the exclusive driver of the necessary transition to an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable future, it is essential to ensure transparency throughout global supply chains and to guarantee our commitment to the environment and sustainable production.
