Up to 80% of the world's wastewater is produced by human activity, which is why treatment processes are an important aspect to consider in the conservation of drinkable water sources. Tradebe's wastewater treatment is a service that is becoming increasingly necessary due to the scarcity of drinkable water and the growing demand of the world's population.

Tradebe has a Water Treatment and Recovery plant located in Igualada, Spain. At this location, the collection, treatment and distribution of wastewater from municipal and industrial sources is carried out through different physicochemical and biological treatments.

The challenge: Efficient energy consumption

In a plant like Tradebe's in Igualada, it is estimated that up to 60% of the energy consumption

is related to the aeration system (the blowers). For this reason, choosing an energy-efficient blower is key to achieving the most efficient energy consumption possible. In this sense, the replacement of reactor blowers in biological wastewater treatment with state-of-the-art equipment represents;

  • Improved energy efficiency: The Altas Copco screw blower element is 30-40% more efficient than a traditional lobe blower, which reduces energy costs.
  • Innovative oil-free screw element: Teflon-coated rotors provide extremely high energy efficiency compared to traditional lobe blowers.
  • Reliability: Integrated oil pump and oil cooler supply cooling oil to bearings and gears.
  • Air quality: It has an oil-free compression element (certified to ISO 8573 Class 0) to ensure air quality.

In total, thanks to the replacement of the aeration system, CO2 emissions will be reduced by a total of 59.53 Tn CO2 per year and a saving of 238,000 KWH/year.

Installation of solar panels

In addition to the replacement of the aeration system, in April 2022, 48 photovoltaic panels (26kw) were installed to supply the service building, workshop and offices, as well as upgrading the fleet to an electric one.

Since the installation of the panels, these are the environmental benefits obtained*:
